Abstract
Research on the school-to-work transition is abundant. Several major gaps still do exist, however. Particularly, they relate to the role of skill demand for several aspects of the school-to-work transition (e.g., duration, job quality) and to the consequences of occupational mismatch in contexts that are characterized by strong linkages between education credentials and labor market allocation. This talk will address both issues by proposing, first, an innovative approach to skill demand that is based on micro-level data (i.e., job advertisement data providing information on vacancies at the job level); and secondly, by focusing on the effects of occupational change at labor market entry in contexts characterized by a strong coupling between occupation-specific credentials and positioning in the labor market. The question is whether there are penalties for such mismatches (e.g., wages, unskilled labor). Empirical evidence based on some of our own research will be presented and discussed.
