Abstract
This talk has two parts. In part one, I will consider the suggestion that monogamy is not morally permissible because no good-making feature can justify the restrictions it imposes on other people. Although many candidate features are found in nonmonogamous relationships too, I will argue that more limited, or circumscribed, forms of restriction in romantic life can help secure our underlying ability to be intimate with others. I call this ability romantic agency. In part two, I provide a brief account of what romantic agency is, and draw attention to the ways our agency in romantic life is relational and fragile.
