Alberto Martinelli is Professor Emeritus of Political Science and Sociology and former Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Milan(1987-1999). Member of the Academic Senate from 1987 to 2003 and former chairman the Commission for international scientific cooperation (1991-2001).
President of the Agency for academic evaluation of the University of Padua. Vice-President for Science of the Executive Committee of the International Social Science Council at Unesco. Past-President of the International Sociological Association. President of the AEM Foundation of A2A. Vice-President of Science for Peace of the Umberto Veronesi Foundation.
Master in Economics and Business, Bocconi University of Milan, Ph.D.in Sociology,University of California at Berkeley, 'Privat Dozent' in Sociology of work. Full professor of Economic Sociology and then of Political Science, Director of the Department of Sociology at the University of Milan.
He also taught at Bocconi University of Milan, the University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University, New York University, the University of Valencia, Cairo Ain Shams University, the University of St.Petersburg.
He has either directed or taken part into several international research projects, like The new International Economic Order, Business Interests Associations, Comparative Charting of Social Change, Sustainability for the 21st Century.
He is member of the Scientific Committees of Aidaf (the Association of Italian family firms), of Lombardy Regional Observatories on Migration and Multiethnic Society and on Social Exclusion, of Milan Expo 2015, of EconomEtica (the Italian university network on Business Ethics and CSR), the Italian Foundation for the diffusion of corporate social responsibility (I- CSR), He has been member of Italy's National Council of Science and Technology for its whole duration.
In 1984-85 and in 1996-98 advisor of the Italian Prime Minister for social policies. He was chairman of the National Commission for the social integration of immigrants, member of the Scientific Committees of Lombardy Institute of Research, vice-President of the Committee for the Prevention of Criminal Activities of the Milan City Council,official representative of the City of Milan in the Executive Committee of Eurocities. Between 2001 and 2006 he has been elected in the Milan City Council.
In 40 years of scholarly work he has been active in teaching, pure and applied research, publishing, international scientific cooperation, and government consulting. He has written well known books and essays on Italian society and political system, modernization and sustainable development, global politics and global governance, entrepreneurship and management, corporate social responsibility, complex organizations, interest groups and policy-making, political and sociological theory,.
His recent research interests focus on Italian politics, nationalism and the European Union, the comparative analysis of political and social systems, the models and actors of global governance, corporate social responsibility and sustainable development.
He is on the editorial board of several scientific journals, among which the International Journal of Comparative Sociology, Quaderni di Scienza politica and Stato e mercato. Editorialist for Il Corriere della sera.
Honors:
In 2012 he received the honorary title of Grand Officer by the President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano.
In 2010 he received the golden medal for civic merit of Milan City Council.
